EPA Begins Review of Pagel's Pit Superfund Site

Winnebago County, Illinois

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is conducting a five-year review of the Pagel's Pit Superfund site on Lindenwood Road in Southern Winnebago County near Killbuck Creek. The Superfund law requires regular checkups of sites that have been cleaned up - with waste managed on-site - to make sure the cleanup continues to protect people and the environment.  This is the third five-year review of this site.

EPA’s cleanup of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), arsenic, boron and ammonia at the former landfill consisted of:

• Removal of contaminated liquids (leachate) for treatment at a public plant.
• Extraction of gas from the landfill to be used as fuel or to be destroyed.
• Covering the former waste disposal area with an appropriate cap.
• Monitored natural attenuation of ground water with plans for other measures if necessary.
• Institutional controls such as deed restrictions to prevent contact with ground water.
• Site and groundwater monitoring and maintenance of the remedy.

And don't forget to read what FAA Regulations say on the topic of landfills - and the birds they attract - being too close to an airport.  According to the FAA, anything less than a 6 mile radius is considered 'too close'.
